The cost is $120 per family.  Textbooks(4) and a CD containing the course material are included in the cost as well as annual membership in BONS. Family members may attend the classes.

The class will be taught by experienced local beekeepers.  The teaching material will be based on that provided by The Virginia Beekeeping Teaching Cooperative (VBTC).  The class will cover hive design and construction, principals of beekeeping, honeybees’ anatomy, hive behavior, colony management, pests, diseases and predators, seasonal care, maintenance of the colony, and guidance in purchasing hives, tools, and bees.

Instruction includes two field days on weekends. One demonstrates the assembly of hive equipment. The other covers the introduction of bees into the hive.  In addition, BONS organizes a bulk purchase of packages of bee colonies and also unassembled hive woodenware. Bee packages and hives are not included in the cost of the class.
