Outer 2x6 boxes offer wind barrier as well as insulation wall creating a hollow tree environment for the hive boxes. Vented quilt covers with pine shavings sot under outer cover. board has been inserted under bottom board to allow minimal ventilation while quilt cover allows slow passage of warm humid hive air through the top. Will see if it works by spring. Will be inserting candy board shortly.

Just finished my first 5 frame nuc box. Followed the design used by David from you tube channel "Barnyard Bees". Wide inner cover ventilates and has room for rapid feeder allowing syrup or dry sugar to be fed and also provides ventilation. Simple outer cover just a tad wider and longer so water drips off. Will paint outside surfaces.

Our very first comb honey harvested during hive maintenance after being away for a week. We attached most of it to frames for bees to recycle but kept this small amount. So good!

Several people stopped by our booth on Saturday asking about availability of bees. Here is a source of bees taking package orders for shipment until May 23rd. I'm sure there are others as well. Will be picking up our nuc on Sunday.

An article on moisture quilts. While they are a solution to humidity and condensation control in winter, they are also useful for ventilation in summer. I am currently using one on each of our hives with out the wood shavings which I will add in the colder months of fall and winter. The photo below taken from the following article.

New book to read. I hope to participate in swarm recovery one day. Lots to learn. Would love to tag along if someone experienced is removing a hive.

Here’s the current configuration of or two hives. Ventilation comes through the inner cover located above the lower box. slits cut in the inner cover are screened and syrup feeder rests on it. Atop the second empty box is a vented shim about 2.5” tall. I enclosed three sides of the stand base to block hot sun and wind. Bottom boards are currently full open screens.

Stethoscope used to listen to bees. Loudest buzzing near center frames as expected. Also strange sounds as if bees are bumping the box or frames. Amazon has scopes for under $20 that work fine for this.
